Standard of practices for RNs in Wisconsin is developed by the Board of nursing to specify of the minimum practice standards for which Registered Nurses are responsible for and to clarify the scope of practice for RNs (Board of Nursing, 2018). It outlines 3 standards of practice.

1). General nursing procedures, which states nurses should utilize the nursing process of assessment, planning, interventions and evaluation when providing nursing care, and decease prevention 2). Performance of delegated acts, describes delegate task one can perform based on education, written protocols or orders, and consult provider when a delegated task is known to cause harm to a patient 3). Supervision and direction of delegated acts, states to provide assistance and support when delegating a task as well as observe, monitor and evaluate the performed delegated task under supervision (Board of Nursing, 2018).

The American Nurses Association is an entity involved in contributing to the development of the standard of practice, it has responsibility for coming up with scopes and standards of practice and enforcing these practices for all professional nurses (Nursing Scope of Practice: American Nurses Association). The Emergency Nurses Association is an association that’s speciality is emergency medicine and examines issues relevant to emergency care, publishes professional guidelines, and issues a peer-reviewed journal based on established protocols in the nursing practice (About Emergency Nurses Association, 2020).

and mentioning entities involved in developing standards of practice. It is an indicator that you understood the topic requirements. On that note, the standards of practice tend to influence processes across various specialties by outlining the profession expectations from members and to provide nurses with a structure for developing competencies. Moreover, the standards help in creation of better understanding and respect for different nursing roles and also helps in promoting and directing nursing practice. In addition, the standards influence nursing processes by ensuring consistency in the entire nursing profession, which is crucial in ensuring that patients get quality care. Eventually, standards of care provide nurses with appropriate information on the quality of care they need to provide to patients and also creates measures to assess the care provided (Moran, Burson, & Conrad, 2016).

Re: Topic 4 DQ 1

“Standards of practice are defined as the level of nursing care that is expected throughout the nursing process. Each standard of practice has a list of competencies to help nurses better understand the expectations. Standards of practice include assessment, diagnosis, planning, coordination of care, health teaching, consultation, prescriptive authority, and evaluation” (Dean,2018, para.8).

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing states that ” Each state’s NPA established a board of nursing (BON) to give the clarity needed to practice nursing that is not provided in the NPA’s general information for safe nursing practice. Therefore, each state governs the exact requirements for nursing, which include standards for education, licensing policies and guidelines, description of the authority of the BON, and disciplinary action. The BON cannot create rules and regulations that go beyond the expectations of the NPA. The BON has avenues for disputes and disciplinary action to maintain the integrity of the nurses that it governs” (2017). According to the quote above The New Jersey Board of Nursing is responsible to establish and maintain the standards of performance of this state. The Acting Director of the Board of Nursing in New Jersey is Paul R. Rodríguez who has many responsibilities, some of which are to ensure that all medical professional licenses, certification are currently active and authorized under the appropriate laws or rules of the State of New Jersey, besides this he makes sure that the medical staff receives proper training for the activities they are expected to perform all in accordance to the New Jersey State Law. Since the specialty practice interests constantly evolves and expands, “ANA and specialty nursing organizations delineate the components of professional nursing practice that are essential for any particular specialty” (ANA, 2010, p. 17). This is to provide pertinent specialty focused continuing education and professional resources.

For example in the hospital where I work nurses are encourage to get a certification according to our specialty, I work in a medical surgical unit and in the future I would like to obtain the Medical Surgical Nursing Certification. I believe this will help me to strengthen my skills within being a Nurse in the Medical Surgical Unit.

RESPOND

Monica, I concur with you that the Nursing Practice Act (NPA) contains laws and regulations that aim to protect patients by ensuring high level of competency and also ensuring that patients get quality care and their safety promoted. Consequently, NPA developed Board of Nursing to ensure that necessary guides are provided to nursing practice. Therefore, both New Jersey board of Nursing and NPA play an important role in the process of creating nursing standards of practice. Both the NPA and the nursing board strive to safeguard the public from unsafe health care providers and eventually ensure quality and competent nursing (Russell, 2017). It is based on this backdrop that the board and NPA play an essential role in creating nursing standards of practice.

Re: Topic 4 DQ 1

Standards of nursing practice developed by the American Nurses’ Association (ANA) provide guidelines for nursing performance. The Nurse Practice Act is determined by the Board of Nursing in each state but commonly require standards for nursing educational programs, types of and requirements for nursing licenses, and grounds for disciplinary actions (Green, 2018 p). The statues are further refined by a board of nursing assigned by the governor that develop administrative rules and regulations and then turned into laws. Then the NPA established The Board of Nursing (BON) which is state specific and was developed to clarify or make the laws more specific. The laws must be consistent with NPA and cannot go beyond it (Russell, 2017). The BON then reports to National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) to enforce the laws to maintain the balance between nursing rights to practice and protection of public health when cared by a licensed nurse.

Having a current nursing license in the state of California, as a pediatric nurse I must be certified in Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) and Acute Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and needs re-certification every 2 years. PNCB’s Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN) is another credential to show specialty in Pediatrics and must be renewed every year. The Nursing Practice Act in California, starting in section 2725 states nursing is “a dynamic field, constantly evolving to include more sophisticated patient care activities. A broad all-inclusive definition states that the practice of nursing means those functions, including basic health care, which help people cope with difficulties in daily living which are associated with their actual or potential health or illness problems, or the treatment thereof, which require a substantial amount of scientific knowledge or technical skill”(BRN, 2011para 3). The standard of practice guide helps me stay accountable and competent with in my scope of practice and up to date with changes in nursing practice.

RESPOND

Hello Claudia,

Indeed, the standards of nursing practice can be developed by the American Nurses’ Association (ANA) and they are purposed to create directives for nursing performance. However, the ANA creates the general nursing standards that applies to every nurse in America. Therefore, it is upon the states and specialties to align with the broad concepts developed by the ANA by creating and revising the standards to fit into the needs of a given state or specialty (Russell, 2017). Therefore, the guideline on standards of nursing that operates in each state is determined by the NPA through the Board of Nursing in every state. While considering the standards of nursing practice in California, it is worth determining how the standards will influence the specialty, which is pediatric nursing. The purpose of the standard is to regulate practice and protect the health and wellbeing of the children and families. Therefore, the influence of standards of pediatric nursing practice is to promote, direct, and guide the professional practice of pediatric nursing experts.
